Why I support Council Resolution # 837

Why I support Council Resolution # 837: I believe arts education is ESSENTIAL to our children’s education

Arts education is an essential piece of our children’s education because it provides opportunities for them to learn, create, innovate, and succeed. Learning in music, dance, theater, and visual arts results in a wide array of social and academic benefits and is instrumental in developing a well-rounded, critically thinking mind.

Arts education is also the law. Yet few of our city’s schools provide the minimum arts education as required by law. As such, the opportunity gap continues to widen as more and more students receive an increasingly limited education. We must ensure a structure is in place to guarantee that all children can meet the minimum state standards for the arts.

That is why we are urging the city council to pass Resolution #837, which calls for dedicated per-pupil funding for arts education. By signing this postcard and getting others to join in support of arts education, we are letting our leaders know that arts education is essential to a quality education and that we will not let our children be denied what they are entitled to under the law.
