THE CENTER FOR ARTS EDUCATION |

I lived in the Bronx until I was 7 years old and rarely left; a trip to Manhattan was like a trip to a foreign land. Back then I wasn’t too conscious of many art forms. I read best-seller fiction and remember going to the theater at City Center — seats in the balcony were only 55 cents then; but I was exposed to little else. Today, parents can insist on cultural programs for their children, and I prefer it that way. I have enjoyed the arts throughout my life, but as a child, I missed plenty. Edward Koch was a United States Congressman from 1969-77 and the mayor of New York City from 1978-89. He was born in the Morrisania section of the Bronx where his father worked as a furrier prior to the Great Depression. His family relocated to Newark, New Jersey where Koch graduated from South Side High School. He attended City College of New York and received his law degree from New York University School of Law in 1948. |
