PARENTS AS ARTS PARTNERS (PAAP) GRANT PROGRAM

Congratulations to the 2008-2009 Parents As Arts Partners grantees!

For the past ten years, The Center for Arts Education’s Parents As Arts Partners (PAAP) grant program has funded innovative programs for New York City public schools, allowing them to work in partnership with both nationally renowned and locally focused cultural organizations to engage parents and families in school arts activities. Through PAAP grant experiences, parents get the opportunity to become artists in a range of mediums – from mural painting to songwriting – and they learn how arts programs connect to and enhance their child’s total education. Since the inception of the grant, CAE has awarded over 1200 grants to over 500 schools, totaling over $4 million in funding.
The PAAP program was created in 1998 on the basis of research that demonstrated the positive impact of parental involvement on a child’s success in school, and the effectiveness of the arts as a means of cultivating that involvement. Since the program’s inception, PAAP grants have funded schools in collaboration with their partnering organizations to develop programs for parents to experience first-hand a variety of art forms: dance, music, visual art, and theater. PAAP programs play a key part in the process of fostering parents’ understanding of the importance of a well-rounded education by providing quality arts learning experiences for parents and families.

PAAP grant program goals are: 1) to engage parents and/or families in hands-on, interactive arts experiences, 2) to build parents’ awareness of the importance of the arts in their child’s education; and 3) to connect families to the New York City arts and cultural community.
In keeping with our commitment to raise awareness of careers in the arts and arts-related industries, CAE requires that at least one PAAP activity address NYS Learning Standard #1 for Career Development & Occupational Studies (CDOS), known as Career Development, by incorporating a brief presentation by a teaching artist or arts administrator about his/her career path. In a related initiative, The NYC Department of Education’s Blueprint for Teaching and Learning in the Arts–Grades PreK-12 also promotes the building of school-to-career awareness of the arts and arts-related industries as an important component of a comprehensive arts education program. Major funding for the PAAP Grant Program is provided by The NYC Department of Cultural Affairs, with additional support from the Carnegie Corporation, the Booth Ferris Foundation, New York Community Trust, JP Morgan Chase, and the Tiger Baron Foundation.
