initiative. Its partnership with the Bronx Museum of the Arts and
the Creative Arts Team involves students, faculty and parents in
creating and presenting works of visual and dramatic arts. Students

to the creation of art works for public presentation. Students are
responsible not only for originating the content of work but for
presenting and interpreting it to the larger school community. The
goal for the partnership is to introduce all members of the school
community to ways of expanding their artistic expression, practices,

Partnering with Learning
through an Expanded Arts Program (LEAP) and Lincoln Center
Institute for the Arts in Education (LCI)
Bronx Charter School
for the Arts X (BCSA) is an elementary school located in the Hunts
Point section of the Bronx that was founded on the belief that arts
education is a catalyst for the academic achievement and social
success of all students. In partnership with LCI and LEAP, BCSA’s
program refines the overall alignment of the school’s delivery of
arts education by expanding residencies to include collaborative
planning time for all key stakeholders. During the program, LEAP
provides three annual residencies for students that address BCSA’s
first category of arts benchmarks, "Creating Art". LCI provides
two full-scale residencies addressing BCSA’s second and third benchmarks,
"Interpreting and Analyzing Art" and "Cultural and Historical Dimensions
of Art". In addition, the partnership program provides extensive
professional development for staff and representatives from both
cultural partners. These professional development offerings focus
on the collaborative planning processes, the actual planning of
model units, instruction in arts content, and sessions for reflection
and evaluation.
