PS/IS 41 K is a school-wide
project/Title I/corrective action elementary school located in the
Ocean Hill-Brownsville section of Brooklyn. Through this partnership,
the school seeks to expand its existing arts programs to its entire
student body and develop a sustainable, more comprehensive and sequential
program. BSRC is expanding its existing "Storytelling" program to
sixth through eighth grade students by training them to be storytellers.
After six weeks, older students begin storytelling to lower grades.
Creative Outlet Dance Theatre provides dance instructors with a
multi-cultural focus that exposes students to all forms of dance.

PS 89 K opened six years
ago as a result of a parent-led effort. Its project, entitled SABER
(Striving towards Arts Based Education and Resources), provides
opportunities for teachers, students and families to actively experience
the arts in an interdisciplinary fashion. The four major components
of SABER include: residencies with professional artists conducted
in Spanish and English; professional development; parent outreach;
and intensive curriculum writing. Young Audiences/New York artists,
PS 89 K’s teachers and arts specialists work side-by-side as they
teach, plan, document, and evaluate residencies to develop a school-wide
arts-based scope and sequence.

Music and Dance and Teachers & Writers Collaborative
IS 392 K is a sixth through
eighth grade gifted and talented school that primarily serves students
in Brownsville, Brooklyn. The school works to create a stimulating,
challenging, and nurturing program for gifted students. Lotus Music
& Dance and Teachers and Writers Collaborative are infusing arts
experiences into the social studies curriculum. Sixth grade students
study, analyze and replicate ancient pottery while learning about
the ancient civilizations of Greece, Egypt, China and India. Seventh
graders enrich their American history curriculum with the arts of
photography and the creation of photo essays. Eighth graders extend
their studies of American history through dance and drama. Through
intense professional development, the program emphasizes project-based
approaches to instruction.
