Arts Exchange (BAX)
PS 115 K is a Title I
elementary school located in the Canarsie section of Brooklyn. In
partnership with Brooklyn Arts Exchange (BAX), PS 115 K’s program,
entitled "Jumping and Shaking into Communities", will infuse theater
and dance into the social studies curriculum of its second and third
grades. Building on existing art and music programs, teachers, parents
and students will work with artists from BAX to transform its standards
based curriculum to one that is more process oriented and develop
a more multicultural component to the social studies curriculum.

Partnering with Ifetayo
Cultural Arts Facility (Ifetayo)
PS 249 K is a kindergarten
through third grade school in Flatbush, Brooklyn, serving a diverse
student body that speaks fifty-two languages. PS 249 K is partnering
with Ifetayo. The focus of the program is on increasing literacy,
verbal communication skills and overall educational motivation through
drama/creative writing, visual arts, music, dance and storytelling.
Ifetayo invites parents to be participants in the classroom, and
offers special adult programs to connect the school community to
the daytime arts activities of the students. To ensure the sustainability
of the program, teaching artists and school staff participate in
professional development activities that help artists effectively
tailor their work to the needs of the classes they work with and
further the ability of teachers to adapt and preserve techniques
learned from the teaching artists.
