CAE PROGRAM SPOTLIGHT2008-2009 Parents As Arts Partners Guidelines & ApplicationCongratulations to the 2008-2009 Parents As Arts Partners (PAAP) grantees! The Center for Arts Education (CAE) has awarded PAAP grants of up to $3,000 to as many as 30 New York City public schools to support arts education activities for parents and families between February and June 2009. Schools develop Parents As Arts Partners programs in collaboration with arts organizations, cultural institutions, and/or community-based organizations. The goals of the PAAP program are to: 1) engage parents and/or families in hands-on, interactive arts experiences, 2) build parents’ awareness of the importance of the arts in their child’s education; and 3) connect families to the New York City arts and cultural community. The Parent GuideIn September 2007 CAE published My Child, the Arts and Learning, a guide for parents of Pre K–2 NYC public school students, which provided an easy to understand introduction to the benefits of and need for arts education in schools. In 2008, CAE released two new guides, Your Child, Your School and the Arts: A Guide for Parents with Children in Grades 3-5 and Your Child, Your School and the Arts: A Guide for Parents with Children in Grades 6-8. The guides provide parents with information that address the following:
A Decade of ProgressIn Fall 2007, CAE celebrated its 10th anniversary with A Decade of Progress, the most comprehensive history of arts education in New York City public schools ever compiled. What began as a 10 Year Report on the history and impact of CAE evolved into an important chronicle of the movement to restore arts education in our public schools and the many players, initiatives, policies, changes and events involved in that immense undertaking. The book and companion DVD narrated by award-winning actor, playwright and former teaching artist Anna Deavere Smith offer compelling stories told by educators, parents, and the architects behind the movement to restore arts education in our public schools. It also features segments with Mayor Michael Bloomberg, School’s Chancellor Joel Klein, and UFT President Randi Weingarten about the importance of and need for arts education in schools and the community. Through these grants, parents can participate in hands-on arts activities that connect to their child’s school-day arts learning while taking advantage of the rich arts and cultural resources that only New York City has to offer. For nearly a decade, CAE has awarded annual PAAP grants of up to $3,000 each to 150 New York City public schools from all five boroughs. Please click here for a list of the grantees. Broadening the Reach of CDP with www.MyArtsCareer.orgTo broaden the reach of CAE’s successful Career Development Program, an innovative and interactive website has been developed to raise awareness about opportunities in the creative industries: MyArtsCareer.org. The website showcases the benefits of the internship experience to students worldwide while engaging educators, parents and workplace mentors. The many interactive tools available on the site make it a distinctive resource for classroom or group learning. As students explore the interactive tools that record experiences through exclusive self assessment and career planning portals, parents and teachers can track student progress to create a unique interactive learning experience. Create YOUR profile today at MyArtsCareer.org! Government RelationsThe Center for Arts Education serves as a resource to inform elected officials about policy issues pertaining to arts education. We believe that participation in arts learning is essential to every child’s education and it is our goal to build support for this crucial issue at the government level. Over the past decade, New York City has made tremendous gains towards providing equal access to arts education for its public schools students, but there remains much work to be done. CAE continues to provide research and information that can assist government officials in developing a comprehensive platform on education that includes the arts. If not, please encourage them to sign our Pledge of Support to provide equitable arts education for all New York City public school students. |
