Partner: Museum for African Art

Robert Peary is a District 75 institution serving students with moderate to severe disabilities between the ages of 3 and 14. Its 2008-2009 program with the Museum for African Art enhanced parent involvement in school activities and arts education, and provided enriching and educational experiences for students and their parents to share. Parents of students performing in the PS 75 production of The Wiz participated in percussion workshops that addressed the role of percussion in live performance and introduced participants to several kinds of African instruments and the types of sounds they create. Under the guidance of a museum teaching artist, participants experimented with various sounds and rhythms, learning how they could further the dramatic action of a play in different ways. Participants then selected instruments and rhythms appropriate to the production, and they composed and rehearsed a percussive underscore for The Wiz. The program provided five sessions for composition and rehearsal, a dress rehearsal and the final performance. These activities created curricular connections between The Wiz and the grade 3 social studies curriculum units on African culture and also introduced parents and students to the cultures of African nations through music.
