Catherine Lan

Catherine LanCatherine Lan was born in Taipei, Taiwan in 1980, she immigrated to Melbourne, Australia with her family in 1989. Lan obtained Bachelors in oil painting from Central Academy of Art, Beijing (1999-03), Artist Diploma from Ecole Nationale Superior des Beaux-Arts de Paris (2003-06), and MFA from Yale University (2007-09). Currently based in Queens, New York, Lan utilizes fashion elements such as faux fur, rhinestone, bead, pearl, glitter and acrylic to explore themes of female identity through the idea of painting. Her mixed media works: 'Snow White', Little Red Riding Hood', 'Rose and Beast' reflect abstractions of archetypal characters in fairy tales. In 2009, Lan was awarded the New York Arts Beijing Residency. She also received the Sanyu Scholarship Fund from Yale University from 2008-2009. Lan has exhibited throughout Asia, Europe, and the United States. In New York, she showed at Kathleen Cullen Gallery and is represented at Fang Gallery in Jakarta, Indonesia. Her recent works will be on view at the Kingston Sculpture Biennale, “Insight, Onsite”, July-October, Washington Art Association, CT in USA, and Art Taipei in Taiwan. She continues to explore the theme of female identity through contemporary perspective infused with the more recent influences of popular culture and pop art.
