Justin Waldstein is a visual artist with a background in painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, and design. He has exhibited his work in galleries, performance spaces, and theatres in New York and internationally. He has also worked as a graphic designer, illustrator, and photographer for many years. A New York City native, he was influenced during childhood by the science-fiction and monster publications his father designed, and by the diversity of fellow artists, dancers, musicians and performers he grew up with in the city. As a student Justin maintained a multi-disciplinary educational approach that combined visual art with art history, film, anthropology, philosophy, religion and Russian literature.
Justin's projections for live performance began in 2008 with a collaboration with singer Susan Oetgen and her band Likeness to Lily. "Bazm-o-Razm," with visuals composed of digitally altered drawings and photos, premiered at the Brooklyn Museum with the Brooklyn Philharmonic Orchestra that year. He completed another projection piece, "Command Voice," during a collaborative residency and performance at the Tribeca Performing Arts Center in 2010. He also created projected visuals, including animation and drawings, for performer Shaun Leonardo’s “Self Portrait,” which was performed at HERE Art Center in New York City in December of that year. Justin continues to explore live, ephemeral projection work along with creating paintings and drawings in his studio in Red Hook, Brooklyn.
This year Justin participated in Community Word Project's Teaching Artist Training Program in which he acquired hands-on teaching experience by working with fellow teaching artists at PS 27 in Brooklyn. He also taught a photography workshop at University Settlement in Manhattan in the summer of 2011. Justin is excited to be involved with the Center for Arts Education.
