Career Development in the Arts

Based on CAE's Career Development Program (CDP) curriculum, this 30-hour, graduate-level course will help educators and counselors (6-12) develop strategies to connect with New York City’s thriving arts-related industries and prepare their students to compete in the 21st century workforce. All participants will receive CDP teaching guides, which include key instructional methodology for the integration of career development activities into the curriculum in order to meet New York State Learning Standards and the New York City Blueprints for Teaching and Learning in the Arts.
Participants will
  • Gain strategies for creating an effective environment that engages all students in their career development
  • Employ instructional strategies that promote self-directed and reflective learning for all students
  • Embed career development in the arts in their lessons and expand the walls of the classroom to include worksites as outside centers of learning
  • Explore the role of arts education in developing valuable workforce skills
  • Discover the vast number of careers in the arts and their economic impact in New York City

A critical component of CAE's mission—to ensure that New York City public school students have quality arts learning as an essential part of their K-12 education—is a commitment to improve the quality of teaching and learning through professional development opportunities for educators, counselors, teaching artists, and school administrators. CAE Professional Development builds instructional capacity in schools by providing tools and techniques to enhance arts education in classrooms and school communities.
